Project Profile: The project is aimed at solving the problems of “inadequacy, decentralization, poor quality, heavy evaporation and seepage losses, and low utilization efficiency” of water resources in areas with 400 mm annual rainfall in southern mountainous areas of Ningxia. To explore the potential of water resources there, the project has developed a rainfall collection and seepage irrigation system that integrates rainfall collection, storage, and slow release. First, the system collects rainfall into a seepage irrigation device. After the rainwater is filtered, it slowly infiltrates into the soil around the root system of the economic forest to nourish the roots. In this way, superfluous rainfall in the areas, which accounts for 50% of the annual rainfall, is converted into available water resources. By improving the soil moisture conditions of economic forests, the rainfall collection and seepage irrigation system helps achieve significant economic, social and ecological benefits by increasing forest yield and quality, promoting forest industry development, improving the ecological environment, and enhancing foresters' income.
