Project Profile: Carbonate/ethylene glycol, as a bulk chemical, is widely used in electronics, medical, automotive and other industries. The current annual demand of carbonate/ethylene glycol in China about 12.5 million tons, and the degree of external dependence is over 70%. A new highly efficient and clean process for the synthesis of carbonate and ethylene glycol by ionic liquid catalysis has been developed by Institute of Process Engineering, Chinese Academy of Sciences. Its conversion rate is 99%, and the selectivity is 99%. At present, the design and development of the catalyst has been completed, and the kilogram scale of the catalyst has been realized; on the basis of laboratory small-scale test, the optimized process conditions have been determined, the 1000 hour industrial side-line test has been completed, and the product quality has exceeded the national standard; the simplified optimization and energy integration of the whole process has been completed, providing the basic data for the preparation of the process package. If 120 000 tons/year dimethyl carbonate and 80 000 tons/year ethylene glycol co-production units are established by the new process, it is estimated that the new energy-saving benefit will reach 60 million yuan. Methyl methacrylate (MMA) is an important organic chemical raw material for the production of plexiglas and coatings. Aiming at the limitation and serious pollution of the traditional acetone cyanohydrin (ACH) process, a cleaner production process was developed to replace isobutylene with toxic and harmful substances/media, and an industrial demonstration of 20,000 tons was completed.
