Project Profile: Combining traditional breeding methods with modern biotechnology means, Institute of Genetics and Developmental Biology of Chinese Academy of Sciences has cultivated a variety of new varieties of sorghum dochna for feeding livestock, and carried out large-scale demonstration and extension in the country. The technical regulations of large-scale cultivation and management of sorghum dochna were formulated. At the same time, the sorghum dochna silage model and the scientific feeding formula of sorghum dochna for cattle and sheep that adapts to different regions were worked out. The characteristics of forged sorghum dochna are: First, sorghum dochna biomass has a high yield which is about 2 times of corn; Second, sorghum dochna shows higher resistance to salt, alkali and drought compared with corn. Third, it has good palatability with high leaf protein content as a silage. And the milk production per cow per day fed with sorghum dochna increased by 1.50Kg compared with those fed with corn; the beef weight gain fed with it is also very obvious. Fourth, the introduction of new silage can break the single source of silage, which is conducive to improving the cattle/sheep diet structure; It contributes a reasonable diet and helps cattle and sheep achieve nutritional balance, which is conducive to the health of cattle and sheep and the quality of milk and meat.
