Project Name: Planting Halophytes under Salt Water Irrigation and Their Forage Utilization
Project Owner: Xinjiang Institute of Ecology and Geography, Chinese academy of Sciences
Project Profile: Halophytes are plants naturally distributed in saline habitats and can complete their life history. Xinjiang is a large region with concentrated distribution of saline soil in China. There are many kinds of saline plants growing in the vast saline soil habitat, which is the only natural vegetation that can grow in the saline habitat, and it is a valuable resource. Many of Xinjiang halophytes are rich in development potential and there are about 200 kinds of halophytes among them. The screening and planting of halophytic forage grass plants can not only make salt-alkali wasteland afforested quickly, but also provide a good feed for the development of animal husbandry. Some halophytes have a high biological yield, crude protein content, betaine and various mineral components, which could be used with other feeds. It is of great significance to reacquaint the saline soil resources and strengthen the research on halophyte resources to accelerate the development and utilization of saline soil and promote regional economic development and environmental construction.
