Project Profile: Electro catalyzed organic reactions are developing rapidly. Especially, the potential applications of ethanol electrochemical oxidation in fuel cells, biomass utilization and fine chemical synthesis have attracted much attention. Based on the electro catalytic oxidation of ethanol and the regeneration of iodine pairs mediated by Electron Proton Transfer (EPT), this project aims to improve the catalytic oxidation of iodine by using semiconductor junctions to improve the conversion efficiency of the iodine pairs and the selective oxidation of alcohol, and to develop an efficient and resource-rich electron-proton transfer mediated iodine pair electro catalytic material. Based on our previous work, chalcogenide semiconductor junction electro catalysts with different band structures were designed and synthesized by using Fe, Cu and Ag-based chalcogenides as semiconductor materials. The effects of different types of semiconductor junctions, band structures and material morphology on the electro catalytic activity of iodine were investigated. The microscopic mechanism of improving the electro catalytic activity of semiconductor junctions was explored. In order to obtain high performance electro catalytic materials, the design and synthesis of chalcogenide semiconductor junctions were optimized.
